Beekeeping Association Presidents, Please inform the members of your association to be vigilant when inspecting their colonies for the next few months and forward this message to them. I have been finding European Foulbrood in colonies across the state, The recent periods of heavy rain this spring have been stressing the colonies similar to three years ago when we had bad outbreaks of EFB across the state. EFB can be cured with Terramycin. Information on diagnosis and control can be found on the following web site  http://www.extension.org/pages/23693/european-foulbrood:-a-bacterial-disease-affecting-honey-bee-brood .  Anyone that thinks they have EFB should either call me or one of the local area association inspectors to confirm the diagnosis or ask questions about treatment. There is no need to burn the colonies.

Please let me know if you ordered bees from Wilbanks through Hayes Wilson and how many so we can figure out who is going to pick up hives.  There is no point in everyone traveling to Overton County to pick up hives.  If you have not already done so, please be sure your payment is sent to Hayes.  FULL Payment needs to be made by the 24th this month.  Spoke with Hayes this morning and there are still a few packages left for purchase.

Let The Swarms Begin

WCBA Members and area beekeepers:

Swarm season is upon us.  Wouldn’t it be interesting (and informative!) to know when the swarming starts (and ends?) here in Middle Tennessee?  In addition to alerting others that swarming has begun in our neck of the woods, over time this information could be used to better plan our early season (spring increase) splits.  With adequate input, this is something we can easily track throughout the year, from year to year.  And with the WCBA website ( www.wilsoncountybeekeepers.org ) we will have these records to easily refer to every year.

Please send your swarm reports to: cedarbees@gmail.com whenever you see your colonies swarm, or when you receive a call for swarm removal.  Be sure to include the actual swarm date if observed, or approximate date if known, along with any other relevant information (time of day, weather conditions, race of bee if known, etc.).

I look forward to receiving your email, to gathering and sharing the data, and to watching the trend over time.

See you all at the next meeting: Monday, 5 March 2012.
