Meeting Minutes – Monday, 14 September 2020

The Wilson County Beekeepers Association meeting was called to order by President Carey Mitchell on Monday, September 14.  We had a small group of 27 attend.   Minutes from the July 27, 2020 meeting were approved as posted in the past newsletter.  The reported checkbook balance is $xxx.
.

Old Business Discussed:

  • Sarah Poss, the new WCBA newsletter editor issued her first issue. She did a wonderful job.  We appreciate all that Marla did in the past.
  • The TBA Conference has been cancelled
    .

New Business Discussed:

  • Due to Covid-19, we have decided to cancel the October Short Course. We are limited in space and cannot interact as we would like, making the class difficult to conduct.  Let’s hope for a better 2021.

Nashville Area Beekeepers will be holding three Saturday morning Zoom sessions in October and November.  You can check out their website for details…www.nashbee.org
.

Monthly To-Do per Carey due to Jessica’s absence:

  • Be sure you have entrance reducers on your hive
  • Check for queenright and strength. Reduce space to control hive beetles
  • If they aren’t bringing in pollen or nectar, be sure to provide supplements
  • If treating for mites, be sure to follow the package requirements
  • Read (American Bee Journal and Bee Culture magazines were available for anyone interested)
    .

 What’s Blooming at our house:

  • Magnolia
  • Vitex
  • Bosc Elm
  • Seven Sons
  • Mexican Bamboo
  • Golden Rod
  • Ironweed
  • Beefsteak Plant
  • White Wingstem
  • Yellow Wingstem
  • Ragweed
  • Partridge Pea
  • Asters
  • English Ivy

(Petra had several examples of pollen/nectar plants currently blooming)
.

Program:  Our own Sterling Earhart had a very informative program on double nuc—two queen hives.    (For those of you that missed the program, he has agreed to do a repeat in January)

Linda Sanders, one of our new beekeepers, talked about her honey harvest and what she learned over the summer.  She said the biggest need is a strong queen.
.

Announcements:

  • October 5—Dale McCleskey—Managing the Sex Lives of Honeybees
  • November 2—Sue Dickhaus—Making Salves (we have had to cancel the Cooking with Honey program, as tasting would not be allowed at this point)

The meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.

The Club’s current checkbook balance is $xxx
