Minutes – 2019/10

Meeting Minutes – Monday, 7 October 2019

Wilson County Beekeepers Association met on October 7, 2019 at the Ward Ag Center for their monthly meeting.  President Carey Mitchell called the meeting to order at the Ward Ag Center with 56 members and guests in attendance.  Minutes from the September meeting were approved as posted in the past newsletter.  The reported checkbook balance is $12,913.92 which includes an extra $586.00 from honey sales after the fair.

Old Business Discussed:

  • TBA Conference is October 11 & 12…those first-time attendees will receive the $25 scholarship at the next meeting…after attending Conference
  • WCBA’s Short Course is scheduled for October 22-24. If you are planning on attending as a refresher, put your name on the list.  If you are new to the game, go ahead and put your name on the list and Petra will give you a registration form to complete
  • We still have a few bears left over from the fair…$6.00 each. Also a few extra empty bears at $6/dozen
  • TBA Board meeting is this Thursday, October 10. Delegates confirmed…Dale McCleskey, Jim Murff, and Candice Thompson.

New Business Discussed: 

  • Passing around lists: 2021 program suggestions (Petra likes to get a head start) and charity selections for Christmas… if you have a suggestion that is not on the list, please include
  • Fair Appreciation Dinner—October 22 at 6:30 in the Expo Center. If you worked the Honey Booth, you are invited.  If you haven’t told Petra you are going, you need to do so by the end of the meeting, as reservations are required
    .

Jessica’s Monthly To Do’s: (In Jessica’s absence, Carey gave the following):

  • Be sure your colonies are queen right
  • Remove empty equipment that the bees are not using
  • Check for hive beetles and get rid of them
  • Make sure your hives have enough honey—40-60 pounds
  • Use mite treatment, if you are planning on doing so
  • Read
    .

Question for the night:  On average, how many wax scales does it take to produce one pound of honey?

(Check your membership book for the answer).  Becky Owen had the right answer!

Susan Welchance from Rutherford County Beekeepers did an excellent program on working with wax

  • October 10 – TBA Board Meeting – Delegates need to attend
  • October 11-12 – TBA Conference
  • October 19 – Ferguson Farm Day – 1535 Pinhook Road, Lebanon
  • October 22 – Fair Appreciation Dinner – Expo Center 6:30
  • October 22-24 – Short Course – 6:30
  • November 4 – next meeting—Annual Elections—all offices are open & Peggy Scholes on Bee Stings

The meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm for refreshments and fellowship.
