Meeting Minutes – Monday, 3 June 2019
On Monday, June 3, 2019, President Carey Mitchell welcomed 55 members and family guests to the annual picnic of the Wilson County Beekeepers at the Ward Ag Center. No business was conducted, as this was a fun event.
Folks were asked to sign in at the table for door prizes later in the evening. There were envelopes at the table for donations to New Leash on Life and the ham drawing. The tickets were $1.00 each.
One of our members, James Tams, passed away on May 12 and it was his wish that his bees and equipment go to WCBA for distribution. There was a small 2-frame extractor that was newly purchased from that estate that we were raffling off at $5.00 per chance with the proceeds going to New Leash on Life.
The Fair schedule and t-shirt order forms were available for anyone interested.
Mark Anderson was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and then give the blessing.
A most-bountiful feast was provided and no one walked away hungry.
After dinner, Carey introduced Paula Applegate, the Vice President of the Board at New Leash on Life who thanked the group for being selected this year for sponsorship. They appreciate any and all donations and will use them wisely.
There were two New Beekeeper scholarships awarded this year, but since neither were in attendance, they will be handed out at the July meeting. (You will find out who won when they are presented…stay tuned).
We had three tables of new equipment from the James Tams estate to be given away as door prizes (hive boxes, nuc boxes, swarm trap, smoker fuel, jars, beetle blasters, bucket, frames, bottom board, and various other items. New Leash on Life provided t-shirts and seasonal prints. There were plants, lighters, and Fair passes. Everyone walked away with something. (items from the Tams estate that were not distributed will be used as door prizes at the regular meetings until they are gone).
Reminders:
- NABA is hosting their Field Day on Saturday, June 8 at Ellington. The cost is $10 for non-NABA members.
- TSU (Avon Williams Campus in Nashville) is offering three beekeeping courses (2 beginner and one apprentice class)
- Next meeting—July 1—Jay Williams will be discussing Marketing and Packaging Honey
After all was said and done, we drew for the Extractor that was won by Chuck Benson and the Ham was won by Chuck Benson (Chuck better go buy a lottery ticket on the way home)
Through the club’s generosity, we were able to give New Leash on Life a total of $467.00 ($376 from donations, $36 from ham tickets, and $55 from extractor tickets). For a small group of members, we did great work!!!!
After writing checks for the scholarships and paying the supplies on the picnic, our ending balance is $xxxx.
Respectfully submitted: Petra Mitchell, Secretary/Treasurer
