Meeting Minutes – Monday, 6 October 2014
Seventy-three members and guest were welcomed by Carey Mitchell, President of Wilson County Beekeepers Assn. to the October 6, 2014 meeting at the Ward Ag Center..
Membership approved the September meeting as posted in the last newsletter.
Old Business Discussed:
- Christmas Charity sheet was circulated. If you didn’t see your local charity on the list, a request was made to add it, so it can be included on the November ballot. The charity with the most votes obtained at next meeting will be our December winner, and the runner will receive our collections in June.
- Also, the mentor list was circulated. If you are willing to help newbees get started…whether it’s answering questions over the phone or helping in the bee yard, you were asked to include your name.
- TBA Fall Conference is October 11 and 12. Vendors will be there…Bountiful Acres is offering their Bye Bye Pain at the 2013 price for preorders. Dadant (Frankfort Office) and Smokey Ridge Apiaries are offering a 5% discount for pre-orders and pickup at Conference
- Short Course scheduled for October 21-23. We have a scholarship winner from Wilson Central—Clay Forkum and his mom Geri. Currently we have 22 signed up. If you are planning on attending, please let Petra know we will have enough seats and food.
New Business Discussed:
- November we will hold Elections—any potential candidates needs to speak up if interested in a position. All offices are open!
- For those of you that worked the Honey Booth this year, the Fair Appreciation Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, November 13 at 7:00 pm in the East/West Building. Petra needs to know no later than the next meeting to place reservations.
Fred’s To-Do List:
- Check stores—60 pounds—feed 2 to 1 syrup, if needed
- Ventilate hives to avoid condensation—thumb tacks
- Entrance reducers or use queen excluders to prevent furry friends
- Hive tops weighted against winter wind
- READ—READ—READ
Carey introduced David & Deannie Hughes who own Rock Bridge Trees in Beth Page, TN and will also be vendors at TBA Conference. David had a wonderful PowerPoint program showing the different trees and shrubs that are excellent bee plants.
Announcements:
- Next meeting—November 3—Hillbilly Mead making with Arlis Swafford..not sure if Paulette Scott will be able to attend.
- Elections next meeting…get your name in, if interested in an office.
With Fred Dawson back at the meeting, he assisted Carey with this evening’s door prizes:
- Peggy Scholes won a Yard Sale
- Ronnie Woodard won a bag of honey candy from Kelley’s
- First Lessons in Beekeeping was won by Peggy Robinson
- Sterling Earhart won the hive tool….can never have enough of those
- Chris Dawson won the honey dipper
- Paula Rogers donated some homemade candy that was won by Clara Vantrease
- And Greg Tomerlin brought in a metal bird house that was won by Norbert Braunwalder
Meeting adjourned around 8:15 for refreshments and fellowship.
