Meeting/Picnic Minutes – 3 June 2013
Carey Mitchell, President of the Wilson County Beekeepers Association welcomed 99 members and guests to the annual picnic on June 3, 2013. Attendees were asked to fill out the sign-in sheets on the table which will be used later in the evening for the door prizes.
The group was asked to stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Special thanks was given to Peggy Scholes and all of the Farm Day volunteers who did a fabulous job educating all second graders on beekeeping the first part of May. Thank yous were also given to Andy & Julia Harper, Randy & Toni Randall and Jim Murff for opening their bee yards for Field Day. Those that attending learned something!
The membership accepted the minutes of the May minutes as posted in the last newsletter. Carey mentioned that chances on the Beginners Kit and county ham were still available and drawing will happen at the end of the evening.
The fair schedule was available for anyone wanting to sign up. Petra will send it out via email after the meeting for those that might have missed the picnic. It will also be available at the next meeting.
Heartland Apiculture Society (HAS) is scheduled in Cookeville for July 11-13. Early registration ends June 19. Go to heartlandbees.com for details and the registration goes directly to HAS.
June 17 will be an extracting workshop and Herb Lester will do an abbreviated Queen Rearing program…no business meeting will be held.
With Fred Dawson coaching ball and not able to attend, he sent in his pinch hitter Karen to give the June To-Do List:
- Inspect at least once for congestion, queen right, stores
- Do not get greedy robbing to much honey—dearth of nectar is possible—need 60 pounds for winter
- Remember to donate some honey to our fair fundraiser
- Read-Read-Read!!!
Carey introduced Abraham and his brother Florin Dudar who are selling nucs and queens in Castalian Springs. Abraham spoke briefly on their operation and generously donated a case of pints full of honey for the club to use as needed. He also made a cash donation to the club.
Carey asked WT to give the blessing after acknowledging that he and Hellon are celebrating an anniversary this week.
Members enjoyed a most bountiful and tasty feast. No one went home hungry.
Carey thanked everyone all of the donations to New Leash on Life which will be delivered in the morning. Besides the donated merchandise, there was a cash donation of $201.00 ($49 from the ham drawing and $57 from the beginner’s kit)
Everyone seemed to enjoy the door prize segment with everyone leaving with something. The winner of the beginner’s kit was Brian Ferguson and Bob Smith won the County Ham.
Respectfully submitted: Petra Mitchell, Secretary/Treasurer—Wilson County Beekeepers Association, June 7, 2013
