Fair Review Meeting Minutes – 23 July 2012
With no meeting in August, Wilson County Beekeepers were called to order by President Carey Mitchell on July 23. Sixty-six members and guests were in attendance.
- Minutes from the July 2 meeting were approved. T-shirts were available for pickup and Melissa Everidge reported that next week we will be getting in some new hats for a cost of $10 each which will have the same logo as the shirts.
- Conference scholarships signup and the fair schedule was still available. Glenn Bradley generously donated all ten frames we will need for extracting during the fair. As Glenn was a Grant Hive recipient last year, he has fulfilled his requirements for paying back of his honey.
- Fair schedules and passes will be mailed out the first week of August for those that signed up to work the Honey Booth.
- Honey Bears for donations were still available with several being taken.
Fred’s Monthly To-Do’s:
- Inspect once for stores and queen right
- Check weight—colonies will need 60 lbs for winter
- Don’t get greedy with taking off honey… sugar costs more
- Reduce entrance on weak hives to prevent robbing while feeding
- Prepare for the fair
Carey handed out copies of the Honey Show schedule and judging criteria. Items were covered in detail along with some tips on how to present fair entries.
- Our next meeting is scheduled for September 10 with Allen Persinger presenting Fall and Winter Management.
- Nine names were drawn for the TBA Conference scholarships: Helen Martinez, Peggy Scholes, Mark Wilhelm, Norbert Braunwalder, Joe Riddle, Scott Crook, Gary Montgomery, Toney Mercante, and Connie Moore. Also three alternates were drawn: Steve Buckner, Peter Klaes, and Randy Martinez.
- Scholarship winners in attendance were given the conference registration to complete and return along with any additional payment. WCBA is paying for a one-day registration ($25) and recipients can pay for the additional day of $10 along with meals (lunch $6.00 per day and the Friday Dinner $15) if they so choose. The winners who were not present received this information via email.
The evening’s door prizes were given out:
- an ABJ subscription was won by Evelyn Reece,
- Glenn Bradley won a bee brush, and
- Eric Meador won a large Honey decal from the National Honey Board.
Meeting adjourned at 8:07 for refreshments provided by the membership and fellowship.
