Meeting Minutes – February 2012
One hundred thirty-plus members and guests attended the February 6, 2012 Wilson County Beekeepers Assn. meeting at the Ward Ag Center in the East/West Building. President Carey Mitchell called the meeting to order.
The 2012 Hive Grant Recipients (Mark Anderson, Chris Crowell, Jane Harbour, Peter Klaes, Danny Pon, Dean Nuss, Peggy Scholes, and Wayne Thornton) were recognized, along with alternates Phil Rogers and Tarry Pleger.
Mentors were asked to stand, introduce themselves, and state where they will mentor. Newbees were reminded that they are responsible for contacting a mentor…not to wait for one to call you. Also, it was stressed that bees need to be ordered soon.
The minutes from the January meeting approved. Members were reminded that it is time to pay dues.
Old business discussed was:
Wilbanks Bees at $78.00 per package. There is a $15.00 non-refundable deposit due at order time and total payment due by March 24th. Tentative pickup is April 6th and contact is Hayes Wilson (931-445-3730) to place the order. They will be delivered to Overton County and arrangements will have to be made for pick-up.
The T-Shirt committee (Roy & Melissa Everidge) as for some help with Jim Walter and Jim Murff volunteering.
New business discussed:
Beginners’ workshop is set for Monday, February 20. Mentors were asked to attend and bring wiring jigs to help with some of the assembly. Complete kits will not be finished, as we only have two hours to cover a lot of items.
For those starting bees this spring, you need to start stocking up on sugar NOW… approximately 50 pounds per hive. It’s easier on the pocket if you start buying a couple bags each week.
Brushy Mountain Bee Farm is offering free shipping to those that attended the Short Course with minimum orders of $100 and first-time purchasers. They have a list of who attended. Petra has an information sheet for all on the list.
Jim Murff discussed the West Wilson Central Bee Class and his hope is to have it in all high schools in Wilson County by next year. Mentors will be needed.
The Swarm List for 2012 was circulated for additions/deletions/corrections. You do have to be a paid member to have your name on the list.
The TBA Board Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 18 at 1:00 pm in Crossville. Directors were asked to attend. We will be picking up the equipment ordered from Rossman.
The Executive Board agreed to sponsor the Honey Show at the Fair again this year for the premiums offered. Per our by-laws, we need to have a vote from the floor. Bill George made the motion, Jim Murff seconded, membership voted and carried.
Petra received a call from Jeff Brown regarding a Wilson County Health Fair in Watertown on March 3 from 9-11 am. If interested in promoting bees and honey, Jeff was to be contacted direct at 443-4778.
Wilson County Farm Day is scheduled for May 9 and 10 at the Fairgrounds. Anyone interested in helping out was to contact Danielle Drueck, who is overseeing the project.
Fred Dawson’s ‘To Do List’ for February is:
*Check stores: feed any colonies with less than 15 pounds (2-3 frames) of stores
*Open colony on warm day (bees flying) and check for brood and laying queen
*Check for dead colonies and remove before wax months set in
*Order packages and ready equipment
*Feed pollen substitute, if needed
Leonard Walker had a most informative program on the Cell Punch Method of Queen Rearing.
We were reminded the next meeting is scheduled for March 5 with Elizabeth Forbes from Kentucky discussing Native Plants and Wild Flowers.
The evening’s door prizes are as follows:
Top Hive Feeder donated by Brushy Mountain was won by Moses McCain
Surprise Gift donated by Caryn Crowston was won by Debbie George
