The 2013 WCBA Short Course was held 22-24 January and was a smashing success. All events involving Fred Dawson and a 16 oz. claw hammer are by law designated a smashing success. Nevertheless, many new beekeepers are well on their way to a lifetime of fun, fascination, frustration, new friendships and fond memories. Congratulations to all who participated and thank you to the volunteers and mentors who took part.

Honeybees have facinating eyes : all five of them. Two compound eyes on either side of their head, and 3 “extra” eyes on top. That’s a bit antropromorphic, we humans think of two eyes as being “normal”, but for most in the Hymenoptera order five eyes is pretty normal
All about structure and purpose
Two compound eyes can be seen on either side of honeybees’ heads. You must look a lot closer to see the three small eyes, the ocelli, that lie between their antennaes on the top of their head.
